Passenger Falls Into Water as Norwegian Epic Breaks Free from Moorings in Sicily

A relaxing Mediterranean cruise turned into a frightening scene on May 30, 2025, when a passenger aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s newly-renovated Norwegian Epic fell into the water after the ship unexpectedly broke free from its moorings in Catania, Sicily.

The incident happened as powerful winds swept through the port. According to Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the ship was securely docked when the weather suddenly shifted. As the gangway disconnected, a passenger who was in the process of disembarking fell into the water below.

Crew Response Was Swift as Passenger Rescued and Treated

The guest who fell into the harbor was pulled from the water by crew members and assessed by the onboard medical team before being transferred to a local hospital in Catania. Fortunately, the injuries were determined to be minor.

Passengers already ashore or preparing to disembark were temporarily left in limbo as the ship was forced to move away from the port due to safety concerns. “The disembarkation and embarkation process was paused until weather conditions improved and the ship was able to safely dock again,” said NCL.

While the cruise line emphasized that the safety of guests and crew is its “top priority,” the unexpected separation left many travelers stranded for hours without clear communication, leading to frustration and confusion.

High Winds Behind Sudden Breakaway from Sicilian Pier

According to Norwegian Cruise Line, strong winds were responsible for the mooring lines parting, which caused the Norwegian Epic to break free from the pier. The force of the wind was so strong it damaged three bollards — large posts used to secure ships at dock — triggering an emergency response.

This led local port authorities to order the ship to wait offshore until conditions calmed. The ship remained at sea for several hours before it was allowed to return and resume boarding. During that time, the crew worked to support stranded guests and assist those with mobility issues once the ship was back in port.

Norwegian Epic Cruise Continues After Scare at Sea

Despite the disruption, the Norwegian Epic — currently on a 10-night round-trip sailing from Rome — has resumed its itinerary. The voyage includes stops in Naples, Florence, and Cannes into the following week. Guests were provided with $100 in onboard credit per cabin and offered a 10% future cruise discount. However, some passengers who had booked excursions independently, expressed disappointment over the lack of direct communication during the chaos.
