Instead of casting off shortly after embarkation, Norwegian Getaway will remain docked at PortMiami overnight, with departure scheduled for approximately 3:00 a.m. the following morning. While that may sound like the start of a delayed vacation, the overnight stay is actually planned well in advance and serves a much bigger purpose.

The ship has been selected to participate in the commissioning of PortMiami’s new shore power system, allowing it to connect to the local electrical grid instead of running its engines while docked. It’s a milestone for one of the world’s busiest cruise ports and another sign that the cruise industry is investing heavily in cleaner, lower-emission operations.

For passengers, the good news is that the vacation is still happening exactly as planned. Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that all scheduled ports of call remain unchanged, meaning guests will still enjoy Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas despite the delayed departure.

What Guests Need to Know Before Boarding

Norwegian Cruise Line has already begun notifying booked passengers and travel advisors about the revised embarkation process.

According to the cruise line, guests should arrive at the terminal during their originally assigned check-in window. That schedule has not changed, even though the ship will remain alongside the dock well into the night.

There is one important restriction that travelers should keep in mind. Once passengers board Norwegian Getaway, they will not be permitted to leave the ship later that evening. If you’re planning one last dinner in Miami or hoping to squeeze in another sightseeing stop, you’ll need to do that before checking in.

Embarkation will also look a bit different inside the terminal. During the shore power commissioning, only one gangway will be available for guest boarding, which could slow the embarkation process compared with a typical sailing. Norwegian says additional team members will be on hand to help direct passengers and keep lines moving as smoothly as possible.

Shore Power Is Becoming a Bigger Deal for Cruise Lines

While staying docked overnight may sound unusual, the reason behind it is actually pretty exciting for the future of cruising.

Shore power allows a cruise ship to switch off its massive diesel engines while in port and instead connect directly to the local electrical grid. Cruise ships require enormous amounts of electricity to operate lighting, air conditioning, kitchens, elevators, entertainment venues, and hotel systems even when they’re not sailing.

Instead of generating that electricity onboard, shore power dramatically cuts fuel consumption, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers engine noise, and improves air quality around busy cruise ports. PortMiami has invested heavily in becoming one of the first major cruise ports on the U.S. East Coast capable of providing shore power to multiple cruise terminals, with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings among the participating partners.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes upgrades most passengers never notice, but it has the potential to make a significant environmental impact as more cruise ships become compatible with the technology.

Don’t Be Surprised by Taxes on Drinks While in Port

One extra cost guests should be aware of is onboard drinks. Because Norwegian Getaway will remain docked in Miami until approximately 3:00 a.m., alcoholic beverages purchased while the ship is still in port will be subject to Miami’s 7% sales tax. This applies even to many guests sailing with an included beverage package, as local taxes are collected while the ship remains under U.S. jurisdiction. Once the ship departs for international waters, those local taxes no longer apply.

Despite the overnight stay, passengers aren’t losing any beach time where it matters.

Norwegian has confirmed that the adjusted sailing schedule still preserves the complete itinerary, including visits to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay.
