13 Young Passengers Reported After Fight on Costa Smeralda
A late-night altercation aboard Costa Smeralda has turned an overnight Mediterranean crossing into a police investigation, after 13 young passengers were reported to prosecutors following a violent brawl between two groups of travelers.
The incident happened during the ship’s nighttime journey between Naples and Palermo, with the confrontation reportedly beginning near the onboard disco. According to Italian authorities and local reporting, the passengers involved were between 18 and 20 years old, with one group from Salento in Puglia and the other from Sicily. The brawl reportedly began when an unwelcome remark directed toward a young woman escalated rapidly. Chairs, tables and other furnishings were allegedly used during the confrontation, which later moved from the entertainment area into corridors and toward the elevators.
What Happened on Costa Smeralda?
The first warning came from the ship’s crew, who contacted Palermo’s Maritime Border Police, known in Italy as the Polmare, after the fight broke out.
When Costa Smeralda reached Palermo, investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Rather than relying solely on witness accounts, officers reviewed and cross-referenced footage from the ship’s onboard surveillance systems, allowing them to identify all 13 people authorities say were involved. Reports published September 15 and 16, 2026 indicate that the altercation began close to the disco after a comment made toward a Sicilian girl was not well received. The disagreement between the two groups then became physical, with the violence spreading through public areas of the ship.Â
The most serious moment occurred near the elevators. One young man was knocked to the ground and lost consciousness, and investigators say some participants continued kicking him in the head while he was down. The injured passenger was temporarily hospitalized for medical examinations. Doctors did not find life-threatening injuries, but the circumstances surrounding the assault have made the incident considerably more serious than a simple argument between passengers.Â
13 Passengers Reported to Palermo Prosecutors
The 13 young passengers were reported while at liberty to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Palermo on allegations relating to aggravated brawling. Being reported to prosecutors is not the same thing as being convicted, and the available reports do not indicate that the 13 passengers were taken into custody or that a final court determination has been made. The investigation demonstrates why a cruise ship is anything but a legal vacuum once it leaves port. Crew security can respond to incidents at sea, surveillance footage can preserve evidence, and authorities can investigate when a vessel reaches port.
