Cruise Ship Slams Into Two Other Ships

Mein Schiff 3 collided with two container ships in Bremerhaven, damaging lifeboats and canceling a 20-night cruise. German police are investigating the captain.

Mein Schiff 3 Collision Sparks Police Investigation

A sudden gust of wind, a collision involving three ships, badly damaged lifeboats, and a vacation that never made it out of port. What began as a planned departure for a 20-night cruise to the Canary Islands has turned into a costly maritime incident, with German police now investigating the captain of TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 3. The October 25 collision in Bremerhaven, Germany, left multiple vessels damaged and forced the cancellation of the cruise. Although no injuries or flooding were reported, investigators are now examining whether the cruise ship’s captain fulfilled his duty of care during the departure.

What Happened When Mein Schiff 3 Left Port?

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, October 25, as the nearly 300-meter-long Mein Schiff 3 departed Bremerhaven in northwestern Germany.

The cruise ship was being assisted by tugboats as it maneuvered away from the terminal in challenging weather conditions. According to police reports, a strong gust of wind pushed the vessel toward two container ships moored nearby, resulting in a collision that damaged all three vessels.  One of the container ships, identified as the MSC Victorine, suffered substantial damage. Reports described a long tear in its port-side hull and deformed structures used to guide shipping containers, while the second container ship sustained more limited damage.

The cruise ship did not escape unscathed, either. Video footage circulated after the accident showed the vessel striking the container ship, with several lifeboats appearing to be torn apart or severely damaged during the impact. Thankfully, authorities reported no injuries, and none of the three vessels experienced water ingress. The Mein Schiff 3returned to the cruise terminal following the collision, where technical experts could assess the damage.

Police Investigate Mein Schiff 3 Captain

The collision has now moved beyond a damage assessment. On October 26, Bremen police confirmed that they had opened administrative-offense proceedings against the captain of the Mein Schiff 3 to determine whether he breached his duty of care. Investigators have not publicly identified a specific mistake or explained what action, if any, they believe the captain should have taken differently. Reports also indicate that investigators spoke with the captains of all three vessels involved in the overnight investigation.

An investigation is standard protocol in situations like this; it does not mean the captain has been found responsible for the collision. Authorities still need to establish the circumstances, including the impact of the wind, the ship’s maneuvering, and the decisions made during departure. Strong winds can complicate port departures, even when a vessel has tugboat assistance. Cruise ships have large exposed surfaces that can catch gusts, and maneuvering in a confined harbor leaves less room to correct an unexpected movement.

The key question is whether the circumstances were handled appropriately and whether reasonable precautions were taken. Until authorities release more findings, it would be premature to assign blame.

Damaged Lifeboats Raise Serious Questions About Repairs

The damage to the Mein Schiff 3 is more than a cosmetic problem. Reports and passenger-recorded footage indicate that multiple lifeboats were damaged, along with associated launching equipment and parts of the ship’s exterior.  Lifeboats are critical emergency equipment, not optional extras. A cruise ship must meet applicable safety requirements, and damage to its lifesaving equipment can affect whether it is permitted to sail. Even if the ship’s engines and navigation systems remain functional, that does not automatically mean the vessel is ready to carry passengers on another voyage. Technical specialists must assess the damage, determine what repairs are required, and establish whether the ship can safely return to service.

TUI Cruises said technical experts inspected the vessel and determined that shipyard repairs were necessary. The financial impact could be substantial, too. German authorities have described the overall damage as running into the millions of euros, although a final repair bill and a complete accounting of losses have not yet been established.

The 20-Night Canary Islands Cruise Is Canceled

The immediate consequence for passengers is clear: the planned 20-night voyage has been canceled.

The itinerary was scheduled to include destinations in Portugal, the Canary Islands, Morocco, and Spain, with the ship expected to return to Bremerhaven on November 14. Instead, the ship remains in port while repairs and the next steps are addressed.  TUI Cruises described canceling the sailing as the only responsible decision after the inspection. The company emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew comes first and expressed regret over the disruption.

There were 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members aboard when the collision occurred, meaning more than 3,300 people were directly affected by the incident. No injuries were reported, but passengers still faced the abrupt end of a vacation they had likely spent months planning.

For travelers, a canceled cruise can create a domino effect: flights, hotel stays, airport transfers, pre-booked excursions, and other nonrefundable expenses may all need attention. Anyone affected should keep receipts, save the cruise line’s cancellation notices, and review the terms of their booking and any travel insurance. That is especially important when the cruise itself is canceled but independently booked flights or hotel reservations remain in place.

Could Other Mein Schiff 3 Cruises Be Affected?

The canceled Canary Islands sailing is confirmed, but the ship’s longer-term schedule remains an important question. Repairs at a shipyard could affect additional departures if the work takes longer than expected or replacement lifeboats and other components are not immediately available.

As of October 26, officials and the cruise line had not provided a definitive timeline for the vessel’s return to service. Travelers booked on upcoming Mein Schiff 3 sailings should monitor official TUI Cruises communications rather than assume their cruise will automatically proceed as planned.  If you have a future sailing booked, check your email and the cruise line’s website regularly. Before making new travel arrangements, confirm whether the departure is operating and ask the cruise line how it will handle any changes to your booking.
