September 1 Changes Everything for Carnival Loyalty Members

After more than a year of anticipation, revisions, delays and plenty of heated discussion among cruisers, Carnival’s biggest loyalty-program shake-up is finally arriving. Beginning September 1, 2026, Carnival Cruise Line is officially retiring the longtime VIFP Club system and replacing it with Carnival Rewards, a spend-based loyalty program built around two new currencies: Rewards Points and Status Qualifying Stars.

For years, VIFP was beautifully simple: you sailed, you earned days, and those days moved you toward the next status level. A seven-day cruise earned seven VIFP points, regardless of whether you spent heavily onboard or simply enjoyed the buffet, pool and occasional Guy’s Burger. VIFP Platinum required 75-199 points, while Diamond began at 200.

Carnival Rewards flips that formula on its head.

The New Carnival Rewards System Is About Spending

Under the new system, eligible Carnival spending earns 3 Rewards Points and 3 Status Qualifying Stars for every $1 spent. Eligible spending can include cruise fare, gratuities, transfers, vacation protection and qualifying pre-cruise and onboard purchases, although taxes, fees and certain other charges are excluded.

The distinction between points and stars is important.

Rewards Points

Rewards Points are the spendable currency. Carnival says they can be used for things such as specialty dining, spa treatments, gratuities, onboard activities and cruise fare through Carnival.com. Points from cruise fare and onboard spending are expected to post approximately 14 days after a sailing ends, while some pre-cruise earning and redemption features are being rolled out separately through the end of 2026.

Cruiser earn 3 Carnival Rewards Points per $1 of eligible Carnival spending. Examples of rewards include:

Status Stars

Status Qualifying Stars are different. They determine whether you are Red, Gold, Platinum or Diamond, and this is where the biggest philosophical change happens: status is no longer simply something you accumulate through cruise days and keep indefinitely.

Instead, Carnival is introducing fixed two-year earning windows. The first window runs from September 1, 2026, through December 31, 2028. After that, the program moves into two-year cycles, with the next major earning period running from January 1, 2029, through December 31, 2030. In other words, the new loyalty program comes with a clock.

A Few Caveats for Diamond and Platinum

There is one enormous exception to Carnival’s new “earn it again” philosophy. Anyone who earned VIFP Diamond status by August 31, 2026, receives lifetime Carnival Rewards Diamond status. Carnival specifically says the decision was made after considering how difficult it is to reach the old Diamond level.

Platinum cruisers are also getting a significant safety net. Existing VIFP Platinum members as of August 31, 2026, retain Platinum through December 31, 2028. Carnival is also giving those members a 10,000-Star boost at the beginning of every two-year earning cycle, effectively providing a recurring head start toward higher status. 10,000 stars is not pocket change – with three stars award for every dollar, this boost is worth about $3,333. But it doesn’t mean cruisers will automatically qualify for the same perks as the old VIFP program, either.

For everyone below Platinum, however, the future is dependent on actual spending and continued Carnival activity.

Milestone Rewards

Carnival has preserved something important from the old system: your days sailed still matter — just not for determining your regular status. Milestones are now based on days sailed rather than number of cruises. Carnival says the first milestone arrives at 50 days, followed by 100 days and every 100 days thereafter. At 500 days, the rewards package gets even bigger.

And Then There Is That Website Problem

Now we get to the part that is hard not to find a little ironic.

Carnival Rewards has been in development for well over a year. Carnival originally announced the program in June 2025 with a planned June 1, 2026, launch date, before later pushing the launch back to September 1. Carnival said the additional time would allow it to incorporate guest feedback and improve the launch experience.

So here we are.

The launch arrives, and Carnival’s own Carnival Rewards website is displaying a site maintenance update warning customers about issues with load times, account logins and access to account information. Carnival is telling guests whose cruises are not within the next 14 days to give the company a little breathing room while updates are finalized.

That is understandable during a major technology transition. But let’s be honest: on launch day, a loyalty program’s website is not exactly a side feature. It’s the scoreboard. Cruisers need to know their status, their stars, their points and their benefits. If members log in and see missing stars, incorrect status information or an account that simply won’t load, frustration is almost guaranteed — particularly among people who have spent years watching their VIFP numbers climb.

What Carnival Cruisers Should Do Now

#1: Don’t Panic!

If your account doesn’t immediately look perfect, it might not be permanent. Carnival says Rewards Points and Status Qualifying Stars from eligible spending are generally posted after a sailing, with some information potentially taking time to appear. For sailings that overlap the September 1 transition, Carnival has also established special rules: VIFP benefits remain honored during the voyage, while Carnival Rewards points and stars are earned for the sailing and may not appear until after the cruise is completed.

#2: Take screenshots or save records of your existing VIFP status

That isn’t because Carnival has announced that everyone’s records are disappearing. Quite the opposite — Carnival says existing status and earned history will transition under the new program. But when a major loyalty system changes overnight, having your own documentation is simply smart.

#3: Understand the difference between Points and Stars

Three Rewards Points per dollar may sound attractive, but Stars are what matter for elite status. Spending money solely to chase a tier can easily become a false economy if the perks aren’t worth what you spend to obtain them.

#4: Keep an eye on your account

The official Carnival Rewards program information and updates are the best place to check the latest rules, earning details and transition information.

Is Carnival Rewards Fair — Or Is It a Loyalty Reset?

That’s the debate Carnival has now handed to its most passionate customers.

Carnival Rewards may ultimately prove to be a more flexible and financially rewarding program for some guests. Heavy spenders could accumulate points quickly, and the ability to redeem those points toward cruises and onboard experiences adds something VIFP never really offered. But for cruisers who viewed VIFP as a badge of time served — literally — the emotional calculation is different. Now the question is whether longtime cruisers will embrace that change, grudgingly accept it, or decide that their loyalty deserves a different ship.
