SpongeBob Musical to Headline on the Hero of the Seas
Royal Caribbean is taking one of Broadway’s most colorful productions somewhere it has never been before: the open sea. The cruise line has confirmed that The SpongeBob Musical will make its at-sea debut aboard the new Hero of the Seas when the fourth Icon Class ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027.
The production will be staged in the ship’s Royal Theater, bringing SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks and the rest of Bikini Bottom to a cruise audience in a production Royal Caribbean describes as a reimagining of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical. In other words, this isn’t simply a character appearance or a short kids’ show — Royal Caribbean is adding a full-scale theatrical production to the entertainment lineup of one of its biggest new ships.
Why The SpongeBob Musical Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

At first glance, putting SpongeBob on a cruise ship might sound like a straightforward family-entertainment move. But the stage production has considerably more Broadway pedigree than the yellow sponge’s television roots might suggest.
The original SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical received 12 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and its creative team brought together an unusually eclectic group of musicians. The score includes contributions associated with artists such as Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, The Flaming Lips, Panic! at the Disco and They Might Be Giants.
The story centers on SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends racing to save their underwater home from a volcanic disaster. That combination of recognizable characters, pop-rock music and a surprisingly broad theatrical style gives Royal Caribbean plenty to work with when adapting the show for a cruise audience.
Royal Caribbean has already begun recruiting performers specifically for the production. Its October 2026 audition information says principals hired for The SpongeBob Musicalare expected to perform four to five shows per week, while also appearing in another Royal Caribbean signature production two to three times weekly. Some ensemble roles call for tap dancing, roller skating or aerial skills.
Hero of the Seas Is Taking Shape for Its 2027 Debut
The timing of the announcement is particularly notable because Hero of the Seas has just passed a major construction milestone.
On September 4, 2026, the ship floated for the first time at Meyer Turku in Finland after more than 18 months of construction. Royal Caribbean says the dry dock was flooded with more than 90 million gallons of water before the ship moved to an outfitting pier, where its interiors and onboard experiences will continue to be installed.
The numbers attached to Hero are eye-catching. The 250,800-ton Icon Class ship is designed around eight neighborhoods and will feature nine pools, 28 dining venues, new family accommodations and attractions including the Category 6 waterpark and Crown’s Edge.
Hero’s maiden season will begin from Miami in August 2027, with seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Every sailing is scheduled to include a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, giving families a beach-and-waterpark vacation before they return to the ship for its theatrical entertainment.
