MSC Cruises Ends Status Match in Three Countries: Could U.S. Cruisers Be Next?
MSC Cruises has closed a popular loyalty perk to new applicants in Spain, France and Italy, raising fresh questions about the future of cruise line status matching. Effective October 15, 2026, travelers in those three countries can no longer apply to transfer their existing loyalty status from another cruise line or eligible travel program into MSC Voyagers Club.
The change could be significant for travelers who have spent years building loyalty with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line or Disney Cruise Line and wanted to try MSC without starting their loyalty journey from scratch. For American cruisers, however, there is still some breathing room: MSC’s status match program remains available in the United States.
The big question now is whether this is a limited regional change or an early sign of a broader shift in cruise loyalty programs.

MSC Cruises Quietly Ends Status Matching in Three Markets
The change took effect quietly on October 15, 2026. Rather than announcing a sweeping global cancellation, MSC updated information on its regional Voyagers Club website, leaving travelers to discover that the application window had closed. MSC confirmed that the decision applies exclusively to the affected markets and that its status match program remains available in other markets where it is currently offered, including the United States and Canada.
As of today. MSC has not announced a worldwide end to status matching, and there is currently no confirmed date for ending the program in the U.S.
What Is MSC’s Status Match Program?
For years, MSC Cruises has offered travelers a shortcut into its loyalty program. Instead of having to complete multiple cruises to establish a loyalty level, eligible travelers could submit proof of membership in another qualifying program and request a corresponding MSC Voyagers Club tier. The program recognized more than 75 loyalty programs, including major cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line. Certain hotel, airline and casino loyalty programs were also eligible.
For someone considering their first MSC cruise, this could be a compelling reason to give the brand a shot. Depending on the tier awarded and the applicable program terms, Voyagers Club membership can provide onboard savings and other member privileges.
The Good News: Existing Status Matches Are Safe
If you already received an MSC Voyagers Club tier through status matching in Spain, France or Italy, there is no need to panic. Reports on the policy change indicate that previously awarded membership levels remain valid under the standard Voyagers Club rules. Travelers who submitted applications before the October 15 cutoff are also expected to have those requests processed under the applicable procedures. MSC has not announced a corresponding overhaul of its Voyagers Club membership tiers or benefits as part of this regional decision.

Why Cruise Loyalty Programs Are Changing in 2026
MSC’s decision arrives during a particularly active period for cruise loyalty programs. Carnival Cruise Line officially replaced its longtime VIFP Club with Carnival Rewards on September 1, 2026, introducing a system that rewards eligible spending as well as offering a way to redeem points toward cruise-related purchases. This shows how major cruise brands are reconsidering the relationship between spending, repeat bookings and loyalty rewards.
MSC is not necessarily following Carnival’s strategy, but it gives travelers a timely reason to review the fine print on every loyalty program they use.
Could MSC End Status Matching in the United States?
This is the question American cruise fans are asking, and understandably so. The U.S. status match application page remains available, and there is no announcement that MSC will discontinue status matching in the United States. For now, travelers considering their first MSC cruise can check the official MSC Cruises U.S. Status Match page for current eligibility requirements and application instructions.
If you are eligible, take a few practical steps before submitting a request:
- Check your existing loyalty tier. Confirm the exact membership level you hold with your current cruise line, hotel or other eligible program.
- Prepare your documentation. MSC’s U.S. application instructions call for proof showing your full name, the loyalty program and your current tier.
- Apply well before departure. Check the latest processing requirements and deadlines, particularly if your cruise is approaching.
- Read the actual benefits. Review the MSC tier you may receive, its booking discounts and its onboard privileges rather than assuming that every perk from your existing program will transfer unchanged.
- Save your confirmation. Keep copies of your application and approval email so you can verify your membership level if questions arise.
One important detail: MSC’s U.S. program describes status matching as a one-time request per guest. It is worth checking the current terms carefully before submitting anything.
A matched tier can make trying a different cruise line more attractive, especially when discounts or onboard savings apply. But those perks should be weighed against the full price of the trip, and travelers should confirm that the benefits they expect are actually included in their booking.
